Indonesia reports increased domestic traffic but a dip in international journeys

The number of airline passengers travelling within Indonesia rose by 13% during the first quarter of this year to 15.2 million, with international traffic declining by 3.54% to 3.2 million from 3.3 million in the same period last year.

Passengers are opting to travel to domestic destinations due to the weak rupiah against the US dollar, which caused many to cancel their umrah [minor haj pilgrimage] trip this year due and holiday closer to home.

Bali, Lombok and Yogyakarta remained the top tourist destinations for domestic travellers.

AirAsia Indonesia has reported a declining number of international passengers during the first quarter of this year again due to the depreciation of the rupiah against the dollar.

Garuda Indonesia, however, has reported an increase in international and domestic passengers during the first three months of this year. Domestic traffic rose 13% with international traffic up 17%.
