IAG pulls out of AEA

International Consolidated Airlines Group, parent of British Airways, Iberia and Vueling, has ceased its membership of the Association of European Airlines due to an apparent disagreement over “some important policy issues”, which are not aligned with the other AEA legacy airlines”, according to IAG.

In a statement, IAG said: “In particular, we believe global liberalization of our industry is fundamental to our future growth and we are not willing to compromise on this fundamental matter.”

The matter in question seems to be regarding the growing argument over the expansion of the Gulf carriers and the current US row on Capitol Hill over alleged state subsidies. IAG is a champion of global airline markets. Indeed Etihad Airways Chief Executive James Hogan recently commented on IAG Chief Executive Willie Walsh’s commitment to a more competitive global aviation market in a speech to the UK Aviation Club.
