El Al is planning to lay off some 200 temporary employees as part of its drive to reduce costs. El Al employs about 5,800 people, some 2,000 are temporary workers. The airline will hold talks with the Histadrut labor federation and the El Al workers committee regarding their collective labor agreement. However El Al unions has declared that they will fight the measures. “Management is harassing those with the lowest salaries and the weakest group of workers, most of whom earn no more than NIS 5,000 a month,” said Asher Ederi, chairman of the airline’s workers committee.
