Delta evacuation flights from Liberia prevented from disembarking in Ghana

The Ghanaian government has prevented Delta Airlines from using Accra’s airport as part of an operation to evacuate US citizens from Liberia in the wake of the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

As part of the evacuation plan, Delta was intending to refuel flights in Ghana before operating on to the continental US.

An official from the Ghanaian government said: “Delta was fully made aware that Ghana would not allow such an idea to be carried out. In fact, Delta was told in plain language that the role Ghana will play will be to allow the airline to refuel in Accra, but not to disembark passengers.”

The government also denied earlier reports that all flights into Ghana from Nigeria were banned: “Ghana has never banned any flight from Nigeria. The only restriction placed on an airline is the prevention of Delta Airline from bringing the American citizens in Liberia to Ghana. The decision was in the best interest of Ghana because of the high incidence of the Ebola virus in Liberia”.
