CTA slams monopoly of Mozambique’s flagship airline LAM

Hipólito Hamela, the economic advisor of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), has criticised the monopoly on the airline market by Mozambique’s flagship airline, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) as it is preventing the development of civil aviation and tourism in the country.

Hamela has called for additional efforts to promote competitiveness and participation of the private sector – one of the first steps towards stimulating competition involves separating institutional responsibilities, drafting policies, regulation and inspection of air carriers, he said.

“We are not talking about total liberalisation, which, in fact, is not in place anywhere in the world, but competition is necessary, driving the flagship airline, LAM, to reduce its tariffs, improve its efficiency and competitiveness,” said Hamela.
