China Eastern Airlines has applied to the People’s Republic of China for permission to operate the first regularly scheduled direct flights between China and Hawaii. The airline will also apply for approval from the US Department of Transportation to begin the service. The decision was taken after the airline successfully partnered with a Chinese tour company to operate three charter flights to Hawaii during the Chinese New Year holidays. The charter flight sold out in 14 days, evidence there is demand for the route.
