China Airlines post record profits thanks to a rise in cargo

China Airlines reported record profits in the third quarter thanks to an increase in cargo shipments and increased travel across the Taiwan Strait.

The Taiwanese airline’s net income was NT$3.76 billion ($123 million) in the three months to September 30, compared with a loss of NT$2.62 billion in 2009. Its nine-month net income was NT$10 billion, compared with a loss of NT$4.99 billion, a year earlier. China Airlines expects record profit in 2010 as cargo volumes double.

Domestic rival EVA Airways posted strong profits again thanks to rising cargo traffic as notebook computers and mobile phones made in Taiwan and China boost shipments.

EVA Air nine-month net income was NT$11 billion, compared with a loss of NT$3.9 billion a year earlier.
