Bombardier-ATR fight for WestJet order

Although Bombardier was considered to be the favourite option to provide WestJet Airlines’ new regional fleet, ATR is making a convincing argument that while fuel costs remain high, its turboprops are the better option.
The Bombardier Q400 burns up to 47% more fuel on shorter routes than the French-Italian ATR 72, says ATR. The French manufacturer has also offered its aircraft at a very favourable discount, sources say.
Bombardier states that because the Q400 seats more passengers, the difference in fuel economy per seat is reduced.
“We’re still evaluating both aircraft and hope to announce a decision later, sometime in the months to come,” WestJet spokesman Robert Palmer said.
