BA WORKERS UNION TO VOTE ON STRIKE

Unite, the trade union representing British Airways cabin, has announced it will ballot members next week over fresh strike action.

The ballot will begin on December 21 and end on January 21. Cabin crew remain aggrieved over proposals to cut pay but also in the refusal of BA to reinstate travel concessions for crew members who took part in earlier strikes.

“Unite is still open to talks, but BA must appreciate the strength of feeling across the airline about how badly they’ve handled this dispute,” said Tony Woodley, the joint general secretary of Unite. “BA must get serious and work with us to settle the issues before us.”

The UK airline says it has contingency plans in place should a strike go ahead over the holiday period, which means it will be able to operate a “substantial proportion” of its short-haul flights, and all of its long-haul flights from London Heathrow.
