Alitalia CEO may leave after Etihad deal is finalized

Alitalia CEO Gabriele Del Torchio has stated he is ready to leave the airline after the investment deal with Etihad Airways was signed on August 8th.

Del Torchio was recruited last year to help return the Italian flag carrier to profit.

Since joining the airline, Del Torchio played a part in the talks to secure the deal with Etihad that was signed on Friday, and will see the Abu Dhabi-based carrier purchase a 49% stake in Alitalia.

Del Torchio told local media: “My task was to lead the company towards an alliance. I don’t know yet what I will do [afterwards], but I’m not ready to retire yet.”

Del Torchio said Alitalia’s board will select his successor. The deal with Etihad is due to be finalised later this year.

Alitalia will also appoint a new chairman. Current incumbent Roberto Colaninno has stated he would step down once a deal was reached.
