Southwest Airlines and subsidiary AirTran Airways have received route authority from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for AirTran to operate international flights to new destinations in Mexico. The Mexican authorities still need to approve the routes however. The new routes include a daily round-trip between John Wayne Orange County Airport in California and Cabo San Lucas/San Jose del Cabo; and one daily round-trip between Orange County and Mexico City. The airline plans to begin these services on June 3.
