AirAsia seeks India as a hub into Europe

Speaking to Gulf News, Tony Fernandes, group chief executive of AirAsia, has commented that the airline’s new Indian hub could be used to launch flights into Europe and Africa.

“I see India in a different way than most people see India … there’s no reason why India cannot be a hub into Europe and Africa,” Fernandes said.

He admits however that this is a long-term plan since AirAsia India only has a domestic licence for now. Until that situation changes, Fernandes said that he will feed traffic into India from his airline’s hubs in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

AirAsia India short-term focus is to concentrate on big routes to Mumbai and Delhi.

“It’s more about frequency on less routes,” he said.
