AirAsia issues break-even expectations for Indian subsidiary

Malaysian-based LCC AirAsia has stated it expects its Indian subsidiary AirAsia India to break-even in December, later than initially planned, after a delay in aircraft deliveries.

AirAsia India commenced operations last month and had previously stated that it would break-even in October.

AirAsia India Chief Executive Mittu Chandilya said: “We expected to have five aircraft before October but we are not going to get five planes.”

Tony Fernandes, owner and CEO of AirAsia, stated that the airline “would also invest more money in new aircraft to increase its operations in India, meaning it would miss its original October target for breaking even.”

Fernandes did not state how many more aircraft AirAsia would buy, or give a figure for the investment.
