Air Asia’s Fernandes denies interest in Skymark takeover

AirAsia group chief executive Tony Fernandes has denied that the Malaysian carrier is planning to launch a takeover offer for Japan’s Skymark Airlines.

Fernandes used social media to state: “AirAsia has no interest in Skymark in Japan. There have been no discussions with Skymark.”

Skymark’s share price had soared following a report carried in the Japanese media citing unnamed sources claiming that AirAsia was among parties interested in taking over Skymark. Fernandes’s tweet dismissed the report as “rubbish”.

Fernandes reaffirmed that AirAsia is “focused on a new airline,” and plans to establish a new joint-venture in Japan, which will launch in the third quarter of 2015. Air Asia has partnered with Japanese companies Rakuten, Noevir Holdings, Alpen and Octave Infrastrcture Fund to launch the venture.
